You've placed higher importance on validating trans-identified men than on needs of female survivors. If I'm not moved by your tears, it's because too many women have cried as a consequence of the ideology you insisted they should embrace they were at their most vulnerable. 9/X

I set up Beira's Place, a single sex service for victims of sexual assault in Edinburgh, because survivors who found it deeply traumatising to be told they must consider men as women if the men want to be seen that way had literally nowhere else to go. 8/9

Perhaps you should 'reframe your trauma', as the man you backed publicly told rape survivors to do? Or we could have an in-person meeting where you express your pain, and my partner, who you didn't know would be present, harangues you - exactly as you did to rape survivors? 7/9

You weren't ever going to respond to women's concerns unless someone high profile challenged you. Finally, you've decided to respond publicly to one of the women with concerns - me. And how do you address those concerns? You claim you're my victim. 6/9

Dear Sandy, While you've been in charge at Rape Crisis Scotland, a man now serving time in prison for multiple sexual assaults was 'treated' at the Edinburgh centre. The man in charge of the Edinburgh centre called rape survivors who wanted single sex services 'bigots.' 1/9 https://t.co/Fzbwfueqo7

@loridarlz @bbrookingc @AlexSmith90014 @alisonrebecca @homeownersexual But some (not all) trans-identified people believe (or claim to believe) they've literally become the opposite sex, or are indistinguishable from it, and appearance is obviously a very important part of that. They have no interest at all in accepting that they don't pass, because they're so invested in the idea that they've already become a man or a woman, or will become one with enough hormones and surgery.

@loridarlz @bbrookingc @AlexSmith90014 @alisonrebecca @homeownersexual It's only relevant to this discussion because we're talking about the reaction of some trans people to strangers recognising their sex. I don't personally care in the slightest how well a trans person passes, but many trans people seem to attach huge importance to passing. There are countless videos online of trans people becoming highly distressed/ enraged/aggressive when addressed or referred to with language congruent with their natal sex. They express disbelief and outrage that they were recognised as male or female, because they clearly imagine themselves to be passing or, at the very least, that their clothes and hairstyle signal clearly that they should be considered the opposite sex. To experience that anger and misery every time a total stranger fails to affirm you - even when stranger has no intention whatsoever of hurting you - is a desperately sad way to live.

@bbrookingc @AlexSmith90014 @alisonrebecca @homeownersexual I'm not saying some of those people don't genuinely think the person posting the picture is beautiful, but I question how kind it is to lie to people about how well they pass, especially if that person is already fragile. Young people chasing online validation and compliments for (sometimes heavily filtered) photos are then left outraged or grief-stricken when they realise the offline world doesn't see them the way they've been assured they appear. Studies show that humans are phenomenally good at recognising each other's sex, even when de-contextualised. That leaves people who believed the soft soaping they got from activists and so-called allies highly vulnerable to future hurt and disappointment.

@AlexSmith90014 @alisonrebecca @homeownersexual For obvious reasons I can't name those who've shared this with me, but I've had direct contact with quite a few very online young people who've come to believe they were misled and manipulated, that there was a narrow set of permissible opinions in their online spaces, that they were encouraged to blame their low and sometimes suicidal moods onto the (gender non-believing) enemy, and that they learned to view themselves as under constant attack by a hostile world, all while being promised that transition would resolve their (often considerable) problems. One person told me that the positivity and affirmation they received on posting new photos of their 'gender journey' was a significant factor in pushing them onwards to further drug treatments and surgery. That person has now detransitioned, but most of the physical changes cannot be reversed. They now say that in their heart of hearts they never believed they passed, but they were in an online feedback loop where people keen to prove their 'allyship' assured them they did, while a bunch of people in the same situation, whom they'd never met offline, constantly praised each other's progress and assured each other that the world did indeed see them as the opposite sex. I truly believe we'll look back at the appalling harm done to some of these young people in utter disbelief that it could have happened. The road to hell is paved with good intentions and some of the 'be kind' people have played an important part in the devastation that's been caused.

@alisonrebecca @homeownersexual With respect, you're making my point for me. Nobody can control how other people see them. Spending your life in constant dread that somebody will perceive or refer to your actual sex is a surefire route to desperate unhappiness. Many young transitioned people and detransitioners spent their formative years online to such an extent they believed compliance with pronouns was a given. Some have been assured online by people who see themselves as 'kind' that they pass undetectably as the opposite sex. It therefore comes as a horrible shock when both things are proven to be untrue out in the real world, especially as their echo chamber has taught them that people who don't validate their self image are evil and cruel and wish them not to exist. Unfortunately for those who struggle to see beyond their own issues, everyone else has problems, preoccupations and vivid internal lives, too. Many will be entirely ignorant of the importance a person places on their gender identity being validated. The vast majority of people do not believe it is possible to change sex and the vast majority of trans-identified people don't pass as the opposite sex. If they want to present as the other sex, that's their choice and business and I'd never want them to see them physically assaulted, or lose employment, or have any harm visited upon them because they're gender non-conforming. But I believe it's the reverse of kindness to preach to such people that anyone who doesn't agree with gender identity theory wants them 'erased', or to encourage them to feel devastated every time their idea of themselves isn't reflected back at them.

@alisonrebecca @homeownersexual We all have a need to feel seen and valued by those closest to us, true. That’s not the subject under discussion, though. We’re talking about demanding validation from total strangers as a right. That’s not only narcissistic and entitled, it is an authoritarian mindset that inevitably puts you into a state of constant insecurity and aggression. When you treat everyone you encounter as a mirror that must reflect you as you wish to be seen, you don’t know whether they’re playing along out of a desire not to upset you and you can’t see their private thoughts. Again and again we see trans-identified people on social media raging and crying at the fact that somebody has misgendered them, even when it was done without any desire to offend them, or refused to pretend they think they’ve changed sex. What a hellish way to live, placing the responsibility for your happiness and mental stability in the hands of people you don’t know. It’s the absolute opposite of self-acceptance or authenticity, both of which are result of inward reflection, and neither of which are harmed by the opinions or compliance of strangers.

@homeownersexual Absolutely. Healthy people's sense of self isn't reliant on how others may or may not see them, yet young and often vulnerable people are currently being encouraged to believe their worth resides entirely in how much validation they can get from others.

An infallible recipe for poor mental health and lifelong unhappiness is believing that unless the entire world validates your self-perception, it hates you. If you move through life telling yourself that unless you can force other people to play along you'll 'be 'erased', if the slightest hint that another person doesn't see you the way you've labelled yourself feels like an attack on your very existence, your life will be spent in a state of miserable insecurity and fragility. Would I like to 'let go' of my femininity? Willingly; femininity is the set of stereotypes imposed on women by men. Would it 'make me feel like dying'? Of course it wouldn't. Vulnerable young people are being harmed by your kind of hyperbolic language, which promotes the lie about the inevitability of suicide among the gender-questioning unless they're given often irreversible medical interventions. Rhetoric like this flies in the face of everything we know about mitigating suicide risk among those with mental health issues and it's particularly gruesome when done by self-congratulatory people on Twitter whose banner picture is 'be kind'.

@Shayadler2 @ConNor1388859 @OneOf_Many_ @beirasplace That's a lovely offer and I get asked it a lot. I deliberately set up Beira's Place as a non-profit rather than a charity, so at the moment we take no donations and I'm covering all costs. This was to keep the centre free of threats of funding cuts from government or anywhere else that might be vulnerable to pressure from gender activists. The board has discussed accepting donations at some point, but if we do, it will be for something very specific, and definitely not core costs/salaries. For instance, some survivors may not have much money. Travel fare/ childcare costs would enable them to keep coming to sessions they'd otherwise struggle to attend. If we decide to open a fund for that purpose we'll announce it. Thank you for wanting to help, we all (board and staff) really appreciate the support we've had from the public x

@ConNor1388859 @OneOf_Many_ The way your fellow men do or don't perceive you is an all-male issue. Setting aside the fact that the vast majority of female victims of SA indicate they'd rather receive counselling in a female-only space, there is zero evidence that trans-identified men present less of a threat to women and girls than the non-trans-identified variety. In fact, there are proportionately more trans-identified men in jail in the UK currently for sexual offences than among the general male prison population. That statistic doesn't mean I think you personally are a predator. What it does prove is that there are at least as many predators among trans-identified men as among men who don't identify as trans. If you and fellow trans-identified men want a space where no other men go, you're free to create one. Nobody wants you raped. Nobody wants you killed or harmed in any way. But women's spaces are for women. Your inability to grasp that you aren't entitled to those spaces because you don't 'identify' as a man is not female rape survivors' problem. Seeking to breach vulnerable women's boundaries does not mark you out as one of us. On the contrary, your arguments are typical of a certain kind of male: one who thinks the satisfaction of his own needs and desires is far more important than the harm he may be causing to women.

We both know you know that, but you've chosen to pretend you don't, presumably because you enjoy validation from a community that enjoys watching women lose to men. That you defend even one female ParaOlympian being robbed of the honours that should have been hers has finally earned you the block I should probably have given you many months ago.
