I've concluded that men asking 'where are the feminists?' routinely tune out our voices, on the basis that we never say anything worth hearing. Then they stumble across an egregious attack on women's rights and start berating us for not screaming loudly enough.

Male politicians who chose to pander to activists issuing violent threats against their own female MPs enabled and emboldened the toxic culture @Keir_Starmer now claims to deplore. When you're part of the cause, you've got some brass neck putting yourself forward as a cure.

This comment by @billybragg perfectly sums up what left wing women have taken from left wing men over the last few years. The problem isn’t whether Julie Bindel and I are correct on the issues, but that certain right-wingers agree with us. If you’ve spent any time at all on the left of politics, you’re familiar with the progressive male class warrior, usually middle-class himself, whose interest in women’s issues begins and ends with sex work, stripping and abortions. He might claim to be a feminist ally and mutter vaguely about ‘equality’ if the need arises, but when a genuine assault on women’s rights erupted under his nose, he cut left wing women adrift without a second thought. He expected us to be so blindly tribal that we’d surrender single sex spaces, jettison the very language we use to describe ourselves, give up fair sport, agree rapists should be locked up in women’s prisons and that lesbians are bigots for not wanting to sleep with the penis-ed, because (horrors!) some people on the right thought these things were wrong, too. Over the last few years, a huge number of PMCWs have become men’s rights activists in all but name, and it’s been profoundly depressing, if not entirely unexpected, to see how enjoyable they’ve found it. Even while attacking women for finding themselves on the same side as right-wingers, the PMCWs stampeded to join the team that was threatening women with rape and violence, harassing women’s conferences, attempting to block access to gender critical events and physically assaulting female demonstrators. PMCWs are everywhere online, lecturing women reliant on state-run services for not welcoming the male-bodied into communal changing rooms and rape crisis shelters, presuming to police women’s language and tone, turning a blind eye to all statistics on male sexual violence that might contradict the ‘you’re all scaremongering bigots’ narrative and demonstrating that their deepest empathy will always be reserved for those who were born with a penis. The truth is that the left has fucked up monumentally on gender identity ideology and until it owns the mistake, it will continue to hand the right valid talking points. As more and more PMCWs realise this, they’ll take shameless refuge in accusations that we, the women criticising the injustice and insanity of gender identity ideology, were enabling the far-right. The fact is that they’ve done exactly that, by refusing to accept that there was anything wrong with a movement that was causing serious harm to troubled young people, trampling all over women’s rights and seeking to remove single-sex services for the most vulnerable. The sense of betrayal women on the left feel towards men like Bragg will take a long time to disappear, if it ever does. I think we all take some grim satisfaction, though, in the fact that evidence of the PMCWs’ misogyny and complicity is a matter of public record, because the panicky back-pedalling and whitewashing that’s just begun is quite something to behold.

@legaltweetz I certainly will take a lot away from this conversation. As I've said publicly before (on the Witchcraft Trials podcast, for one), I've always accepted that for some people, transition is the only way to live comfortably in the world and I want those people to be given precisely the same rights to fair treatment and personal safety as anyone else. As I've also said before, I know an older trans woman, previously a gay man, who (I believe and hope) hasn't ever regretted transitioning. I'm glad you regret nothing, either. I'd like to think everyone who's transitioned feels exactly the same way, although sadly I know that's not the case. Aside from the young female detransitioners with whom I'm in direct contact, I've also heard from trans-identified men who also deeply regret their surgeries. Those men were dealing with significant mental illness when they made the decision to transition and feel that should have been identified/addressed by the medical profession before they were encouraged to take irreversible physical steps that have left them with serious health issues. I've never once suggested that all trans women are predators, nor do I believe that, but we're clearly not going to agree on the single sex spaces issue. The argument that women will be raped/assaulted anyway, so why not let trans-identified men into their spaces, seems frankly callous to me. I can't remember a single feminist arguing that trans women don't need to go to a bathroom to get beaten up, so let them use the gents, but that's precisely the argument many trans activists use regarding women and girls. I've also said many times that I want trans women to be safe, without making girls and women less safe. I also think it's grotesquely unfair to allow trans-identified men to compete against women in sport. What you perhaps don't realise is that it's precisely because I feel huge empathy for, and identify strongly with, people who feel different or alienated that I'm so deeply concerned that young people who fall into that category aren't being given the right support. Anyway: we disagree, but I want to thank you again for explaining your position. I wish you nothing but a long and happy life and hope your present is full of love, as you deserve.

@legaltweetz I've never claimed single-sex spaces have successfully kept out every man intent on voyeurism or sexual assault, but the statistics don't lie: unisex spaces are more dangerous for women and girls. As the saying goes 'good men stay out so bad men stand out.' A study done by the Sunday Times found that 88% of sexual assaults committed in changing rooms happen in those that are unisex and as we both know, nearly 90% of sexual assault victims are female. No study has shown that trans-identified males don't retain a male pattern of criminality. That doesn't mean I think all trans women are predators, far from it, but some demonstrably are, and as a criminal defence lawyer (I have one in my family, so I know this), you'll know that sexual predators will go to literally any lengths to access victims. If claiming to be a woman is the price of entry, they will do it, and indeed already have, in many well-documented cases. So you're right, I don't believe trans-identified men should be able to access single-sex spaces set aside for women and girls. I agree that there are many fights worth fighting currently, and I give time and money to them, too, but the prospect of half the world's population losing rights for which they've fought so hard seems to me a very important battle, and that's before we get to the rising number of minors who regret what was done to them in the name of gender identity ideology. I'm particularly worried about vulnerable girls and young lesbians being put on a medical pathway that may leave them infertile, in pain and unable to achieve orgasm. I'm in contact with quite a few such girls now and their stories are harrowing. Thank you for the measured discussion, though. I know from previous tweets you don't like me or my views, but I appreciate you setting out your position like this.

@legaltweetz I apologise for thinking you were a trans woman, it wasn't clear in the tweet to which I replied, only that you're trans. You seem to be acknowledging that you know what it is to be female because of your biology, as you draw a distinction between your pre-transition self and post-transition self. You go on to say: 'I'm not a trans woman... so please don't tell me I don't know what it's like to be female,' and there, too, you seem to be acknowledging that, unlike you, trans-identified men don't know what it is to be female, because they have different biology to you. Where we seem to differ is that I oppose changing the definition of 'women' so that men can enter single sex spaces, compete against women in sport, and take jobs and honours supposedly for women. As someone who knows what it is to be female, because they were born with a female body, do you think those things are fair or desirable? Is harm to women and girls acceptable, if done to assuage trans-identified men's feelings?

Redefining an oppressed class of people to include members of the oppressor class does not liberate or benefit those who are oppressed. Pretending men can be women too is the very definition of a luxury belief. The consequences aren’t felt by men or wealth-protected women. 2/3

You've replied to me many, many times, so I wasn't aware you wanted anonymity over and above your name and avatar. From now on, I'll happily hide your name. I'm interested in whether you see any irony in telling me I'm not trans so not qualified to speak, when you have literally no idea what it is to grow up female, yet feel entitled to redefine 'woman' to include yourself?

I don't 'reduce myself' to my womb when I say I'm a woman any more than I reduce myself to my ears when I say I'm not deaf. These are facts. There is no liberation for women in pretending their sex class isn't definable. If men can be women, there is no such thing as a woman. https://t.co/ziqinxaAYA

@KirstieMAllsopp @SuzyQue27155082 Again, you prefer bromides to engaging with the issues. Young people have suffered irreversible harm. Are they supposed to feel compassionate towards the people jeering at them and threatening them for sharing their stories? Are lesbians supposed to be nice and polite towards the men trying to shame them into doing dick? Are rape survivors supposed to feel kindly towards those removing their few single-sex spaces? ‘Why can’t we all behave like we’re at a dinner party’ isn’t a solution, it’s a way of making issues invisible so people who don’t want to think about them aren’t made to feel uncomfortable. You lecture only one side in this debate and we both know why. You’re scared of the trans activists, and it’s far easier to tell women to be nice than face down the kind of people who issue death threats.

It seems you’d rather critique style than actually engage with the subject. Many in this debate don’t have that luxury. These matters affect them too deeply. I don’t think many women would want to break bread with those who’ve threatened them with death and rape, I’d be surprised if those who were bullied out of jobs fancy making small talk with their ex-colleagues and I doubt detransitioners want to pass the salt to therapists who shoved them onto hormones and approved them for surgery after woefully scant assessments.

I certainly do take odds with people trying to rewrite history, though, as you did in saying airily that we've always been able to debate so-called gender affirming care for minors. As I've already proved to you, many of those attempting to raise concerns around puberty blockers, and the ideology that led them to be used off-label, have paid for it with their careers, their reputations and their mental health. You've previously dismissed concerns about what's been done to young people in the name of ideology, along with the well-founded fears of women most in need of single sex spaces, as 'moral panic'. As far as I'm concerned, high profile people who've cheered all this on, without bothering to inform themselves of the real world implications of their feel good slogans, are complicit.

@XXyAndIKnowIt @SaintCirce @DarcyWAHF @KirstieMAllsopp 100%. Poverty is and always has been a woman's rights issue. Insecure housing, living in high-crime areas, reliance on state-run facilities, poorly-paid service industry jobs where male members of the public feel entitled to harass and intimidate, fear of complaining because of reliance on the income and lack of money for tribunals, shouldering the burden of being unpaid carers etc, etc. I've lived both lives so I'm well-qualified to speak on the immense difference money makes to women's and girls' safety. Watching affluent women who will NEVER face the consequences of giving away rights they don't need, who have zero personal experience of or interest in how millions of women live, is one of the things that has most enraged me during this debate.

What I did was give you examples of what has happened to people who put their livelihoods on the line to try and prevent harm to others. The people I mentioned in my thread are heroes for what they did. They paid a massive price for wanting, among other things, a debate around child transition. The other side’s objective was demonstrably and even openly to shut down debate, to make things like ‘puberty blockers carry known and severe risks’ literally unsayable. ‘Why can’t everyone just be nice like me?’ has been the go-to response for many high profile people during this debacle. I don’t think it’s ‘kind’ to remain silent while people with everything to lose stand up against medical experimentation on children or the removal of women’s rights.
