The evidence is clear and those still determined to deny it - you, @bphillipsonMP, every trans activist determined to push their unfalsifiable ideas about gender onto the whole of society - will rightly be judged by history as having enabled harm to women and girls in service of a dangerous, quasi-religious ideology.

@FinalTelegraph I was supposed to be an object lesson to other women. I've seen more than one person say on X, 'd'you want what happened to JK Rowling to happen to you?' This is a movement that relies on intimidation. The only possible response is to refuse to be intimidated. That said, I've always acknowledged that standing my ground was far easier for me than for women who risked losing their livelihoods. I have nothing but sympathy for those who can't speak out because they face job loss if they do. The people I despise are those who turned ostrich even though they had the financial means and standing to speak up. There are a lot of people in the arts and academia who believe exactly what I believe (and I know this because they've told me so), but chose comfort over conscience. In doing so, they condemned vulnerable youth, and women and girls without their privileges, to suffer what they themselves will never need to endure.

I don't feel 'less than' people without it, but nor does my bleeding disorder mean an inability to clot should be considered an innate attribute of the human species. I inherited an unusual physical anomaly. Nature made a mistake. People with DSDs aren't a strange third sex or a hybrid, they are men and women with physical anomalies. The respectful thing to do might be to stop using them as pawns in an ideological battle that has nothing whatsoever to do with their medical conditions, because I know for a fact that many of them find it demeaning and othering.

Nobody denies that there are people who may have ambiguous genitalia at birth, or possess small amounts of tissue more typically found in the opposite sex. Nobody has ever denied that nature makes mistakes. However, there is no DSD that causes a person to produce both eggs and sperm. Human beings are a dimorphic species. I doubt it will bother you, but some - perhaps most - people with DSDs (and I know this, because I've had direct correspondence with such individuals) do not appreciate people like you trying to leverage disorders of sexual development to support the idea that biological sex doesn't really exist. They find it highly offensive to see their often complex and traumatic medical conditions used as 'proof' that men can be women, and women can be men, if they say they are.

Please explain what differentiates a trans woman from 'a man in a dress and make up', because I've been playing close attention to trans activists for a decade now and the most common explanation I've been given is 'he says he's a woman, so play along or you're evil.' Runner up explanations: A man is a trans woman if he's put in a lot of effort into looking like a woman. However, a man who's made no such effort is just as valid a trans woman as one who does. Trans women with beards and penises are completely valid. The existence of men and women with differences of sexual development ('intersex' people) prove that a completely different group of people who don't have such disorders are trans if they say they are. The true mark of who's a man or a woman isn't biological sex, but the untestable gender identity that resides in all human beings, whether or not they believe in it. At the same time, trans people must be given easy, automatic access to cross-sex hormones and surgeries so they can alter themselves to more closely resemble the opposite biological sex.

@FFS_WhatNow Celebrities who stampeded to cheerlead for experimental procedures on minors will find it extremely difficult to pretend they were inwardly sceptical all along, especially after rushing to smear as hateful and bigoted anyone questioning the evidence base for handing out puberty blockers, irreversible surgeries and hormones to children. If it were up to me, the doctors involved would all be in jail, but an honest assessment of how these children have been harmed must also examine the culture in which the scandal took place. Deviation from ethical standards of care has become not only acceptable, but laudable, and that's because large parts of elite professions, including medicine, had fallen for a dangerous, incoherent, quasi-religious ideology that's done widespread harm. Gender identity ideology only spread as far and as widely as it did because so many people in positions of power and influence fell over themselves to champion it in the belief that this proved they were super-progressive and sophisticated. I can only hope the photo ops and social media likes were worth it. Personally, if I'd publicly fundraised and advocated for child transition and then read @LeorSapir's article, I'd never sleep again.

She's very bright, well-educated, liberal, and absolutely could not understand why I wouldn't be comfortable undressing, or knowing my daughters were undressing, in front of a trans-identified man. As we talked, I realised she had no understanding of a feminine-presenting man who wasn't gay. I said to her, 'what about autogynephiliacs?' She said 'what's that?' Had literally never heard the word. And when I explained, she just looked blank. To this day I don't know whether that was because she'd never heard of cross-dressing as a paraphilia, or thought I was making it up.

'He has a point, but he's too blunt.' From the start, a key tactic of the gender identitarians has been linguistic prescription, and it's proved shockingly successful. Trans activists' shibboleths and euphemisms have been allowed to penetrate the upper echelons of our culture with devastating consequences to freedom of speech and belief. Huge swathes of liberal media, the arts, academia and publishing have thrown themselves with gusto into the defence of a quasi-religious belief causing provable real world harm, and in their arrogance they've been outraged when people they assumed were part of their In Group have refused to march meekly along in lock step. Time and again, I've seen and heard well-educated people who consider themselves critical thinkers and bold truth-tellers squirm when put on the spot. 'Well, yes, maybe there's something in what you're saying, but it's hateful/provocative/rude not to use the approved language/pretend people can literally change sex/keep drawing attention to medical malpractice or opportunistic sexual predators. Why can't you be nice? Why won't you pretend? We thought you were one of us! Don't you realise we have sophisticated new words and phrases these days that obviate the necessity of thinking any of this through?' As the vibe shifts, and a lot of people in the elite professions start trying to reposition themselves, the obvious place to start is, 'it's not that I couldn't see your point, but did you have to say it that way?' We dissenters were supposed to find a way of questioning the chemical castration of children while calling it 'gender affirming care.' We were meant to defend the rights of vulnerable women while also using female pronouns for male rapists. We should have found a way to discuss fairness for women and girls in sport, while pretending that the ineradicable physical advantage men have over women doesn't exist. Either a man can be a woman, or he can't. Either women deserve rights, or they don't. Either there's a provable medical benefit to transitioning children, or there isn't. Either you're on the side of a totalitarian ideology that seeks to impose falsehoods on society through the threat of ostracisation, shaming and violence, or you're not. The alternative to being 'blunt' - using accurate, factual language to describe what was going on - was to surrender freedom of speech and espouse ideological jargon that obfuscated the issues and the harms caused. We've always needed blunt people, but we need them most of all when being asked to bow down to a naked emperor.

I'm seeing quite a bit of comment about this, so I want to make a couple of points. I'm not owed eternal agreement from any actor who once played a character I created. The idea is as ludicrous as me checking with the boss I had when I was twenty-one for what opinions I should hold these days. Emma Watson and her co-stars have every right to embrace gender identity ideology. Such beliefs are legally protected, and I wouldn't want to see any of them threatened with loss of work, or violence, or death, because of them. However, Emma and Dan in particular have both made it clear over the last few years that they think our former professional association gives them a particular right - nay, obligation - to critique me and my views in public. Years after they finished acting in Potter, they continue to assume the role of de facto spokespeople for the world I created. When you've known people since they were ten years old it's hard to shake a certain protectiveness. Until quite recently, I hadn't managed to throw off the memory of children who needed to be gently coaxed through their dialogue in a big scary film studio. For the past few years, I've repeatedly declined invitations from journalists to comment on Emma specifically, most notably on the Witch Trials of JK Rowling. Ironically, I told the producers that I didn't want her to be hounded as the result of anything I said. The television presenter in the attached clip highlights Emma's 'all witches' speech, and in truth, that was a turning point for me, but it had a postscript that hurt far more than the speech itself. Emma asked someone to pass on a handwritten note from her to me, which contained the single sentence 'I'm so sorry for what you're going through' (she has my phone number). This was back when the death, rape and torture threats against me were at their peak, at a time when my personal security measures had had to be tightened considerably and I was constantly worried for my family's safety. Emma had just publicly poured more petrol on the flames, yet thought a one line expression of concern from her would reassure me of her fundamental sympathy and kindness. Like other people who've never experienced adult life uncushioned by wealth and fame, Emma has so little experience of real life she's ignorant of how ignorant she is. She'll never need a homeless shelter. She's never going to be placed on a mixed sex public hospital ward. I'd be astounded if she's been in a high street changing room since childhood. Her 'public bathroom' is single occupancy and comes with a security man standing guard outside the door. Has she had to strip off in a newly mixed-sex changing room at a council-run swimming pool? Is she ever likely to need a state-run rape crisis centre that refuses to guarantee an all-female service? To find herself sharing a prison cell with a male rapist who's identified into the women's prison? I wasn't a multimillionaire at fourteen. I lived in poverty while writing the book that made Emma famous. I therefore understand from my own life experience what the trashing of women's rights in which Emma has so enthusiastically participated means to women and girls without her privileges. The greatest irony here is that, had Emma not decided in her most recent interview to declare that she loves and treasures me - a change of tack I suspect she's adopted because she's noticed full-throated condemnation of me is no longer quite as fashionable as it was - I might never have been this honest. Adults can't expect to cosy up to an activist movement that regularly calls for a friend's assassination, then assert their right to the former friend's love, as though the friend was in fact their mother. Emma is rightly free to disagree with me and indeed to discuss her feelings about me in public - but I have the same right, and I've finally decided to exercise it.

@fabia_moraes Trans people already have all the rights everyone else in society has, but some (not all) trans people demand that women give up rights: the right to single-sex spaces, to fair sport and to freedom of speech. No marginalised group has ever demanded that rights be stripped from other protected group, and no other supposedly marginalised group has ever been indulged by politicians, police and elite institutions to the extent the trans lobby has.

I have said, because there's ample evidence to prove it, that some men who claim a trans identity have committed acts of voyeurism and sexual assault against women and girls in supposedly single sex spaces. You've just said you wouldn't enter a girls' or women's single sex space because you're 'not a sexual predator.' Could you explain how women and girls are supposed to tell which trans-identified men are predators and which aren't? Because a proportion, provably, are. Determined predators, as anyone who knows anything about safeguarding will tell you, go where the pickings are easy. If all it takes to get inside a woman's locker room is to say 'I identify as a woman', predators will do that. We know this, because they've already done it, multiple times. A speed sign doesn't magically make cars slow down. A No Trespassers sign doesn't make the field inaccessible. Such signs are there to warn people that there will be consequences if they're disobeyed. A sign that excludes men from a space, so that women and girls can have safety, privacy and dignity has no power except the one you yourself have just acknowledged. When men who don't seek to transgress females' boundaries stay away, women can tell who the suspicious ones are, because they ignored the sign. This gives women the right to complain or protest. Men waiting outside have the right to point out to the intruder that he's going into the wrong space. I understand that you think some of your fellow men should be allowed to use women's facilities and spaces because you think those men's feelings are more important than the safety, privacy and dignity of women and girls. That's where we disagree.
