@cyberfrontier Old school transsexuals existed since long before the rise of gender identity ideology and failing to recognise the diversity within the trans-identified community makes any accurate analysis of what's going on, especially for young people, next to impossible. I know trans people who believe in the reality and immutability of human sex and who support sex-based rights. Some have shared their complex and sometimes traumatic histories with me. Dismissing everyone who self-identifies as trans as 'cult members' takes us precisely nowhere.

I say the following again because, while I understand people's strong views on the matter, some of the language policing is getting a bit wearing. As I've said multiple times, I do not believe that a person can be born in the wrong body and I don't believe in gendered brains or souls. I believe the ideology that preaches such ideas is dangerous. However, there are people in this world who want to present as the opposite sex for many diverse reasons - some of which I'm truly sympathetic to, others far less so - all of whom call themselves 'trans.' I use the word 'trans' in the full awareness that this umbrella term covers multiple groups who have nothing else in common with each other, such as straight men who enjoy cross-dressing for erotic purposes and young lesbians who, tragically, feel they'll be happier without their breasts. When I talk about sex-based rights, I use the word 'trans' to denote 'people who wish to be seen or treated as the opposite sex', no more or less. Telling me ad nauseam that 'there is no such thing as a trans person' isn't overly helpful, because you're trying to pull me into a different argument, on which I've already made my position clear.

Unlike sex, gender identity is neither scientifically observable nor testable. In spite of the million word salads attempting one, there's no stable definition of gender identity. The term is variously but not exclusively applied to an innate certainty that one is not the sex one was born, to a constantly shifting sense of self that may be male, female, neither or both, to the extent to which one identifies with often regressive sex stereotypes, or to something akin to a gendered soul, which may be trapped in the 'wrong' body. Gender identity is an unfalsifiable idea, a socio-political construct, a quasi-religious belief. At bottom, it is defined by little more than a person's subjective feelings, or (more accurately) their claim to feel those feelings. We are told we must believe in the existence of those feelings and that those feelings constitute a new form of fact, even though in literally no other sphere of human life is it held that a person's self-perception must be accepted unquestioningly as true or real. Gender identity ideology is doing measurable, serious harm to some very vulnerable young people and to women. We're watching a medical scandal of terrifying proportions unfold in front of us, along with an assault on the rights of women and girls in the developed world that is unparalleled in my lifetime. I've read treatises on astrology that make more sense than the spiel written on gender identity and I believe that those who continue to push gender identity as 'real' or scientifically observable are guilty of causing widespread damage. The effects are being felt not only by vulnerable individuals, but in once-impartial and rational disciplines and institutions, which, like you, have embraced a form of faith-based fundamentalism masquerading as intellectual sophistication.

There are people in this world who want to be perceived - for many diverse reasons - as the opposite sex. Such people are commonly called 'trans'. I've made it clear countless times that I don't believe we all have a gendered essence that may turn up in the wrong body and many trans people (in the sense in which I've used the word) agree with me. To assume a person you don't know has a 'dangerous split personality' is offensive . You know nothing about the person with whom I was talking, nothing about their inner life or their struggles. They were nothing but polite, respectful and empathetic so I find your reaction strange, to say the least.

The point is that those women were and are extremely important - the most important of all.
