@Raw_Toast It's overwhelmingly MEN who denigrate athletic women by calling them 'manly'. I've literally never heard a woman say that outstanding female athletes like Martina and Serena have an 'unfair physical advantage' over other women. The only talk of unfairness in relation to women's sport I can remember before the present insanity concerned Eastern European female athletes who, decades back, were put on testosterone at massive cost to their own health. Those women certainly had an unethical advantage over their fellow females, but nowhere nearly as unethical or dangerous as letting men compete against women. The old-time dopers must be furious; it would have been so much easier to cheat these days. No need to feed young girls drugs, just field an entire squad of bearded, penis-ed athletes, some of whom call themselves women.

@TheGeneral_0 Not always. Kids are watching TikTok videos of surgeons selling the idea that bodies can be modified like Lego. Schools affirm kids’ trans identities behind parents’ backs. A certain kids’ charity in the UK sent out breast binders to pubescent girls without parental consent. Many parents are struggling to protect kids from a Zeitgeist telling them that anxieties about puberty, sexuality and growing up can be fixed by lifelong reliance on Big Pharma and by doctors who make Frankenstein look ethical.

@mqyxf @Cockyolliebird @transwidows @theneonrequiem Fetish, by definition, is a very specific erotic interest in something that lies outside typical sexual behaviour or stimuli. Women wearing form-fitting clothes falls very much within the arena of conventional heterosexual behaviour. We can certainly critique it, and analyse why straight men like to see women in revealing and sometimes constrictive clothing, but it isn't fetishistic behaviour on either of their parts; socially speaking, there's nothing remotely unusual about it. When a man dons the same clothing, he's transgressing social norms. That's where the 'fetish' comes in. Wearing tightly-fitting dresses and high heels isn't something men typically do. To don this specific kind of female clothing (when there's plenty of clothing designed for women that's practical and not revealing) the man is usually seeking a specific response, which is often shock. He might be deliberately looking to provoke a discussion around gender, he might be looking to upset the staid and conventional, or he might get an erotic thrill out of doing it. The latter is fetish.

@SnydeNotSnarky @transwidows @theneonrequiem I've said countless times that I disagree with trans-identified men using single-sex spaces reserved for women, but I was responding to a very specific point about sport, which I do respect. I think we all know how X works, don't we? Here, as in life, it's possible to agree with somebody on one point and not on others. We can all play the 'gotcha' game: 'you agreed with this person on this issue, therefore you must agree with literally everything they've ever said or done.' Plenty of people interact with me on here who'll disagree with a ton of things I believe or have said in the past and I'm not deluded enough to think one friendly message means the person I'm talking to thinks I'm infallible or faultless. The absolute irony of me having to say this after the past few years is more apparent to me than to anybody, but several times recently I've been chided for being too nice to trans-identified people. A few comments have implied or even stated outright that I shouldn't interact respectfully or warmly with people who've been perfectly nice, or empathetic, or reasonable, or polite, when talking to me. As I despise authoritarianism and compelled speech wherever they occur, I'll keep talking to people however I want. After all, if I was that afraid of other people misrepresenting, misinterpreting or misreporting what I've said, written or believe, I'd have spent the last quarter of a century in an underground bunker with no internet access.

@Cockyolliebird @transwidows @theneonrequiem I think a lot of women are now so battle weary and have taken so much abuse they have a visceral reaction to men in dresses they never used to have. For me, the key isn't so much 'everyone can be what they want', because, you know, some people want to be serial killers. I do believe in people having the freedom to dress and present themselves however they like in their private lives (I don't apologise for thinking it outrageous that any man should be allowed to wear fetish gear to teach kids, for example). However, a lot of people in positions of power are squeamish about acknowledging the very different motivations people may have for testing social boundaries around dress and presentation. Kink is the great unmentionable for many of those who're desperate to be seen as kind and tolerant and liberal, but until we're honest about it, some very dubious individuals will continue to exploit this movement, which is already harming LGB people, who're getting blowback for the actions of heterosexual men, and women and kids, especially the most vulnerable, continuing to be put in harm's way.

@theneonrequiem I agree with you, Rudy. I sometimes catch flack for that line from women who were with AGPs. I happen to totally understand where they’re coming from. In my 20s I knew a woman who was older than me and married to a highly abusive AGP and literally nothing was hers as far as he was concerned. Stealing her underwear, cosmetics, shoes etc was routine, as was coercive control, and she lived with a huge amount of shame and trauma before finally divorcing him. The parodic, highly sexualised and often degrading presentation of female dress and styling when adopted by certain men (sometimes drag queens, sometimes men who call themselves ‘trans lesbians’) conveys an association of femaleness with humiliation and objectification that has its roots in true misogyny, which some (straight) men find erotic and many women find demeaning and offensive. There’s also a very real fear response. Of course not all men in lipstick are a danger to women, but there’s ample evidence that men who want to parade themselves/photograph themselves in fetish or fetish-adjacent gear designed for females get an erotic charge out of other people seeing them that way, and often from violating women’s literal and metaphorical boundaries. Women know that such men can be dangerous to them and, again, only those who’ve led an unusually sheltered life won’t be aware that where there’s one paraphilia there are usually more. All of that said, I do not want to live in a world where my lesbian friends can’t rock a three-piece suit, where a beautiful boy can’t wear eyeliner, and where Prince and Bowie and Annie Lennox wouldn’t have been free to play with style and dress in ways that liberated a lot of us. A return to ‘dresses and make up are only for girls’ immeasurably weakens our ability to argue against ‘if you want to wear a dress and make up, you’re really a girl.’ So I stand by what I wrote. Wear what you like - but that doesn’t mean society’s not allowed a view on where you wear it, and whether you’re entitled to new rights because you’re wearing it.

A few are centre right, but socially liberal (pro-gay marriage, women's right to choose etc.) Til my dying day I'll never understand why so many on the left couldn't see gender identity ideology was homophobic, misogynistic, dangerously authoritarian, quasi-religious and anti-science, or how they could shrug off real world consequences such as vulnerable young people being subject to unevidenced and irreversible medical interventions, single sex spaces being decimated, women's rights rolled back. What you call the GC movement hasn’t ever been a monolith, but a loose collection of separate political movements and individuals, some of whom have literally nothing in common but the belief that sex is real and matters. This has been both blessing and curse. On the positive side, real, lasting solidarity has been forged between women in different political parties who’ve worked collaboratively to fight back against the massive assault on their rights. On the negative, left-wing feminists are being lumped together with people whose attitude towards gender expression is as regressive as that of hardened trans activists (‘if you want to wear lipstick and a dress, you’re a woman’/‘dresses and lipstick are only for women’). I will say this, though. Many, many women who wouldn’t have thought twice ten years ago about asking for help from a gorgeous young man in lipstick working at the MAC counter have now been on the receiving end of so much aggression and so many direct threats from men in lipstick that they’ve developed a conditioned response, an instinctive wariness, where formerly there was complete indifference. I’ve experienced this personally. I was approached in the street by a pink-haired young man with what I’ll call very exuberant dress sense and my adrenaline shot through the roof. For a second I thought, ‘this is where I finally get punched.’ And he couldn’t have been sweeter, wanted to talk Harry Potter and get a selfie. Ten years ago my immediate response to somebody with his style would have been purely appreciative, but no longer, sadly, and the change in me, and in a lot of other women, has been brought on by a tsunami of threats and rage, not because we think there’s anything innately wrong with men wearing make up.
