🙄The fringe idea that we all have a 'gender identity' that may or may not match our biological sex is the whole point of this discussion. Trans activists act as though the existence of 'gender identity' is a settled, self-evident point, when to the vast majority of the world it's unevidenced, quasi-religious, pseudoscientific nonsense, which has been imposed top down on our society with serious consequences for vulnerable women and troubled youth in particular. Meaningful discussion about competing needs and rights cannot happen inside an elitist ideological bubble where everyone is forced to adopt gender ideology's approved jargon, accept its self-contradicting slogans as fact and pretend fact-light assertions and feeble sophistry are critical thinking. You tell us to 'educate' ourselves, by which you mean, 'adopt our beliefs unquestioningly,' but at this point, most of us know your arguments off by heart. These include, but are not limited to: feelings trump facts and unless we agree we're 'erasing people from existence'; women and girls aren't definable entities, so why should they be entitled to their own sports and single-sex spaces; clownfish and people with DSDs mean sex is 'on a spectrum' and 'woman' is a set of stereotypes associated with the female sex class, so it doesn't matter if you've got a penis, if you identify with those stereotypes you're 'valid'. The reason we haven't been won over by these talking points and remain so tragically 'uneducated' isn't that we've failed to grasp the sophistication of your world view. It's that we think you're talking unadulterated bullshit and making fools of yourselves.

You can’t explain what makes some men women without invoking the ideological concept of ‘gender identity’, an ineffable, unfalsifiable concept in which most people don’t believe. Good faith argument is not possible if one side demands submission to two unevidenced beliefs before discussion can begin. Changing your mind when the data changes is honourable and nobody should be shamed for saying ‘I called this wrong, I’ve rethought my position.’ I’m talking about a very specific cohort of people who’ve enabled, cheered on and perpetrated real and sometimes irreversible harm, tried to suppress inconvenient statistics and evidence, demonised the vulnerable and whose authoritarian tactics have included threats of violence, defamation, harassment and censorship. They deserve no free pass.

As I don't doubt you know, Sandie Peggie, a nurse, has just been forced to talk publicly in court about her menstruation and a sexual assault she endured to justify her discomfort at pretending Dr Beth Upton is a fellow woman and sharing changing room facilities and a bathroom with him. It starts with pronouns, one small white lie. It ends, far too often, in women being forced to abandon rights for which our foremothers fought, and never dreamed would be removed once won.

The very making of the request tells me the man in question thinks he has the right to control my language, and thereby, to control me. He is asking me to acquiesce in a lie, to pretend, implicitly, that he and I are the same. It is an act of dominance, which is why the women discussing this with you keep using the word 'demand', as opposed to your preferred 'request'. In the current political climate, any request to use opposite sex pronouns when talking about a trans-identified man carries a threat. It is highly disingenuous to pretend you don't know that many women and girls have been put through absolute hell over the past few years, either for refusing to pretend men can be women, or for hurting an individual trans-identified man's vanity, even unintentionally. I'm assuming that if someone put a gun to your head and told you to hand over all your money you wouldn't much care how sweetly they'd asked. That's where increasing numbers of women are on this issue. They're sick of having a metaphorical gun held to their head, of the ever-present threat of being investigated, reported, harassed, sacked, defamed and dragged into court - simply because they won't pretend men are women. All you've been doing for the past two days is prove exactly how shallow your understanding is, not only of this issue, but of what women have already lost and endured. This makes your patronising 'just be nice, ladies,' lectures even more offensive.

I'll repeat it: If an adult feels they can only exist comfortably and authentically in this world by dressing in the opposite sex's clothes, having surgeries and taking hormones, or in adopting one of the many gender labels, I wish them safety, happiness and health, as long as they're not harming anyone else. You, however, seem to think that for a trans-identified man to be 'comfortable' and 'authentic', everyone in the vicinity must abandon their freedom of speech and belief to accommodate his 'identity'. Women are not validation props, comfort blankets or support animals. We aren't a rest home for men who don't like being men. If a person's happiness and self-esteem resides entirely in whether or not they can compel everyone around them to lie, whether out of fear or pity, I would respectfully suggest they are unlikely to have a very comfortable life, and are about as far from being 'authentic' as it is possible to be.

Like many other lefty misogynists, what you're asking is for women to indulge male fantasy, to own own detriment. I respect the right of every human being to wear what they like, call themselves whatever they like and believe whatever they like about themselves, so long as none of that infringes on the rights of others. You've demonstrated very clearly that you do not respect women's right to name sex accurately, without which we can have no serious conversation about sex-based rights and safeguarding. Your 'respect' goes only one way. You want women to pretend men can be women so as to spare trans-identified men's feelings, but you appear not to have considered in the slightest the psychological toll it takes on women and girls, being compelled to speak a lie because it's their job to be 'kind'. You, personally, suffer no detriment whatsoever in calling a man a woman, to be 'nice.' You think it makes you a Really Good Guy and walk away feeling good about yourself, having lectured women on their 'bigotry'. You've spent many hours now proving you don't understand why using factual language is important to us. Again and again, you return to the poor hurt feelings of those born with penises.
