Women fought for years, not to pretend they weren't women, but to seek to redress the wrongs done to their sex class because of their biology. Women and girls are coerced, persecuted and controlled all over the world by the larger, stronger male. Even in our most liberal societies, women remain subject to sex-based violence and assault, still see their reproductive rights challenged and are still threatened with rape and even death by men angry that they're sticking up for their rights. 'Womanhood' is not some quasi-mystical state into which men can identify. Pretending it is makes both studying the harms done to actual women, and enforcing women's rights, impossible. A straight man who likes wearing stockings is not a lesbian. Wanting breasts doesn't make a teenaged boy a girl. Both are male, and giving them access to women's single-sex spaces has caused proven harm to women and girls. How does taking away single-sex spaces away from vulnerable women advance feminism? How did three men occupying the medal podium at a women's sporting event help female athletes? You cannot describe what you're too frightened to admit. You cannot defend what you can't define. The last decade has seen a wholesale attack on the rights our foremothers fought for. It continues to astound me that privileged young women who've benefited from those advances all their lives are proudly urging on the dimantling of the protections and spaces that were so hard won, and pretending this is progressive.

@Burkysmirkey @grayizzyz I've seen the prison stats in the UK and yes, at first glance that's what they seem to show, but I think one would need to be an informed statistician/academic or scientific researcher to properly analyse that data. When did the trans-identification occur, before or after conviction? Is the trans-identified individual androphilic, gynephilic or both? Do they have a proven history of gender dysphoria or is this evidence of a cross-dressing paraphilia? Such analysis is well above my pay grade. All I know for sure is that trans-identified men have never been proven to be less of a threat to women than other men, and the evidence we have to date suggests that they are, at the most conservative estimate, at least as much of a risk.

It seems literally impossible for certain trans activists to grasp that not everything is about them. The only rape crisis centre in Edinburgh prior to the opening of Beira’s Place was run by a trans-identified man who publicly told potential service-users they would be ‘challenged on their bigotry’ if they didn’t agree he was a woman. Meanwhile a ‘non-binary’ man subsequently convicted of rape, and found by the sentencing judge to harbour serious hostility towards women, was permitted to access the centre’s services. Trans-identified men in Edinburgh were better served than women when it came to accessing support after rape or sexual assault. Beira’s Place, which I founded and fund in its entirety, gives women a choice. The female-led, female-centred model of support is provably preferred by most female survivors. We know for a fact that some of our service-users didn’t seek help before we opened, because they didn’t want a male providing their therapy, or for men to be accessing what they needed to feel was a completely safe space. However, if a woman was happy with a male support worker, or with males also using the service, she could of course choose the alternative rape crisis centre. Some men, trans-identified and not, disagree that even the most vulnerable and traumatised women should be allowed to exclude men from rape crisis centres, yet many women see a male-free space and service as the last or only chance of putting their lives back together. It takes immense courage even to pick up the phone to access help after rape. Yet, even at their worst moment, these women told by activists like Willoughby that their priority should be centering his feelings, pandering to his ‘identity’ and pretending that they don’t recognise his narcissism and aggression as a quintessentially male response to not being given what he wants, by women. The simple truth is that no decent male, however they identify, would ever seek to breach the boundaries of women whose sense of self and safety has been shattered by their experience of male violence or rape. 98% of sexual predators are male. 88% of sexual crime victims are female. Beira’s Place exists because I saw an unmet need and the fact that we’ve been so busy since we’ve opened proves, not that women hate trans-identified men, but that this is where women feel safe enough to deal with trauma they might otherwise have had to carry with them forever.

Women have fought (and are still fighting) the single biggest land grab on their rights in my lifetime. Some have sacrificed their livelihoods and safety to combat a pernicious ideology that has infiltrated elite institutions, including government. Women have been persecuted, harassed, smeared, roughed up and forced to take employers to court for discrimination. They've suffered severe detriments purely for believing what the Supreme Court has ruled to be reasonable and correct: that women are a definable biological class that has specific rights under the law to which males, however they identify, are not entitled. Do these politicians have any shame? They sided with the persecutors, the issuers of death and rape threats, the violent men demanding access to women's and girls' protected spaces, including domestic abuse shelters, rape crisis centres and prison cells. Will any of them issue an apology or admit that they made a serious error in siding with well-funded activist groups lying about what the law actually said, and which had measurable, severe impact on some of society's most vulnerable women? As another public wave of death threats is issued against women because of the Supreme Court ruling, their silence has become deafening. I'm just one of millions of women disgusted by the lack of accountability or remorse. We will not forget.

Janice isn't claiming to speak for all women, @PennyRed, but given that you aren't one ('the category of "woman" does not fully describe my lived experience') it's hard to see why you should be speaking for any women at all. Literally nobody thinks the Supreme Court ruling 'legislates trans people out of existence.' Trans people have exactly the same rights and protections they had before the ruling, and unless they've mass combusted while I wasn't paying attention, I'm fairly sure they continue to exist. If some trans-identified people in the UK are currently experiencing rage and disappointment because the Supreme Court clarified that they don't have rights they believed they had, the responsibility lies firmly with activist groups and sections of the media who've persistently argued, falsely, that gender transition turned a person into the opposite sex for all practical purposes in the eyes of the law. You can personally take some responsibility for that state of affairs, of course, because you've spent the last few years enthusiastically championing the removal of single-sex spaces for women and girls. Indeed, you went so far as to tell the mother of a fifteen-year-old who asked how her daughter was supposed to feel on discovering a penised stranger in the girls' changing rooms, 'I'd tell her it's rude to stare at other people's genitals.' That anti-woman, anti-safeguarding quip puts you right up there with every male creep who's spent recent years insisting women and girls have no right to privacy, dignity or safety. You'll undoubtedly continue to offer your contributions to the debate, but don't be too surprised if a lot of old-school women (the boring kind who've been deprived of the fascinating experiences that make you non-binary and genderqueer) find it supremely easy to disregard anything you've got to say on the subject.
