Women must accept and admit that there is no material difference between trans women and themselves... “As many women have said before me, ‘woman’ is not a costume. ‘Woman’ is not an idea in a man’s head. ‘Woman’ is not a pink brain, a liking for Jimmy Choos or any of the other sexist ideas now somehow touted as progressive. Moreover, the ‘inclusive’ language that calls female people ‘menstruators’ and ‘people with vulvas’ strikes many women as dehumanising and demeaning.” I elaborated on my views in the podcast “The Witch Trials of JK Rowling.” In February of this year I wrote in response to another male journalist on X: “If an adult feels they can only exist comfortably and authentically in this world by dressing in the opposite sex's clothes, having surgeries and taking hormones, or in adopting one of the many gender labels, I wish them safety, happiness and health, as long as they're not harming anyone else. You, however, seem to think that for a trans-identified man to be 'comfortable' and 'authentic', everyone in the vicinity must abandon their freedom of speech and belief to accommodate his 'identity'. “Women are not validation props, comfort blankets or support animals. We aren't a rest home for men who don't like being men. If a person's happiness and self-esteem resides entirely on whether or not they can compel everyone around them to lie, whether out of fear or pity, I would respectfully suggest they are unlikely to have a very comfortable life, and are about as far from being 'authentic' as it is possible to be.” For five years, men have repeatedly tried to argue me out of my belief that it is anti-freedom of speech, coercive and paternalistic to tell women they must be ‘kind’ and call men women if that’s what the men want. In short, I’ve stated my position on this matter multiple times, as clearly as I can, and, with respect, I’ve already read your own arguments and I find them neither original nor persuasive.

Sex is anatomical. 'Womanhood' and 'femaleness' are not metaphysical or mystical states. I am a woman by virtue of my anatomy. Clearly, if I woke up tomorrow with a male body, I'd have had atypical experiences for a male, because I'd have experienced what it is to exist in the world as a female. I've given birth three times, a spectacularly life-changing experience no male has ever experienced. I've also been treated in specific, sometimes harmful, ways, because I have female anatomy. One major difference between trans activists and me is that I believe society needs to change, whereas they believe the individual should alter themselves to fit a societal notion of what men and women are. I don't believe in codifying and reifying gendered expectations, I believe in breaking them. I'm appalled that minors are being medicalised, sterilised and deprived of sexual function because they feel discomfort with the roles they're expected to play as boys/girls. For centuries, women have fought to be full human beings in societies that demand they demonstrate the behaviours expected of them because of their anatomy. Liberation for women does not lie in saying 'if I don't want to fulfil those expectations, I must be a man.' Liberation lies in saying 'I'm just fine as I am, and fuck your sexist notions of what a woman should be.'

@rejserin As was recently clarified by the Supreme Court, trans-identified men do not have the right under UK law to use single-sex spaces reserved for women. Such spaces include public bathrooms, which by definition aren't single-sex if men are allowed to use them.

There are many differences between us, George, but some are particularly relevant to this debate. 1. You're a man and I'm a woman. 2. You've been wealthy and famous since your early 20s. I didn't become well known until I was well over 30. 3. I've never been given 15 months for handcuffing a man to a wall and beating him with a chain. 4. I believe in freedom of speech and belief. For more than half my life I was a regular anonymous person. Some of those years were spent in poverty. That's why I understand the importance of single-sex spaces for women who're reliant on state-funded services. That's why I understand why mixed public changing rooms are a problem for women. That's why I have a problem with men 'identifying' into women's rape crisis centres, domestic abuse and homeless shelters that are supposed to be single-sex. I don't stand against gender identity ideology because I personally still need those services, but because my life has taught me exactly how vulnerable women are when they don't have the money/influence I have now. You yourself have been convicted of violent assault. The overwhelming number of people who commit crimes of violence are male, just like you. That's why I don't want to see men identifying into women's prison cells or any of the spaces mentioned above. Not all men are violent or predatory, but enough are to make safeguarding necessary. Lastly, I'm a writer who believes in freedom of speech and belief. As we both know, the safe, fashionable thing in the arts world right now is to do exactly what you're doing: parrot TWAW and sneer at the unenlightened plebs who think sex is important and matters. For a man who was once all about non-conformity, George, you couldn't have become more predictably or more tediously conformist.

It's immaterial whether male sex offenders identify as women before or after arrest: in both cases, they hope to gain (easier) access to women's bodies and all-female spaces. @rejserin I'm not using conjecture. It is provably the case that proportionally more trans-identified men are in jail for sex crimes than among the general male prison population. It is provably the case that men - however they identify - commit the overwhelming majority of sexual and violent crimes. It is provably the case that women and girls make up the vast majority of victims of sex crimes. No amount of word salads and motte-and-bailey fallacies change these cold, hard facts.
